What Is a Gigawatt?
SHARE TO SOCIAL MEDIA
A gigawatt (GW) is a unit of power equal to one billion watts. It is commonly used to measure the capacity of large-scale electricity generation, including power plants and solar energy systems.
For context, one gigawatt is enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes, depending on energy usage and grid conditions. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, large power plants are often measured in gigawatts to represent their total electricity-generating capacity1.
How a gigawatt compares to other energy units
Electric power is measured in watts, with larger systems using higher units to describe capacity.
Common conversions include:
1 kilowatt (kW) = 1,000 watts
1 megawatt (MW) = 1 million watts
1 gigawatt (GW) = 1 billion watts
Gigawatts are typically used for utility-scale energy systems, while kilowatts are more common for residential solar installations.
Why gigawatts matter in energy
Gigawatts are used to measure how much electricity a system can produce at a given moment.
This measurement is important because it helps:
Compare the size and output of different power plants
Understand grid capacity and energy supply
Track growth in renewable energy like solar and wind
The U.S. Department of Energy uses gigawatts to describe national and regional energy capacity, including solar deployment across the United States2.
Gigawatt vs. gigawatt-hour
Gigawatts and gigawatt-hours are related but measure different things:
Gigawatt (GW): a unit of power that measures capacity at a specific moment
Gigawatt-hour (GWh): a unit of energy that measures electricity produced or used over time
For example, a power plant may have a capacity of 1 gigawatt but produce a certain number of gigawatt-hours of electricity over a day or year.
How gigawatts relate to solar energy
Gigawatts are often used to describe large-scale solar energy production and total installed capacity.
Utility-scale solar farms are typically measured in megawatts or gigawatts
National solar capacity is tracked in gigawatts to show overall growth
Residential systems are much smaller and are usually measured in kilowatts
According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, U.S. solar capacity has grown significantly in recent years and is measured in gigawatts to reflect total installed power across the country3.
With providers like Sunrun, individual home systems contribute to this broader energy capacity, even though they are measured on a smaller scale.
