Home solar panel systems are designed to be durable, long-lasting, and relatively low-maintenance. Unlike other home energy equipment, solar power systems have no moving parts and typically require only minor upkeep throughout the year. However, regular maintenance still matters for optimal performance, long-term protection, and peace of mind.
In this guide, Sunrun will explain solar panel maintenance costs, the services typically involved, and how we simplify maintenance services with our solar installations.
How much does solar panel maintenance cost?
According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its national lab partners, the estimated annual operations and maintenance (O&M) cost for a standard residential rooftop solar panel system is approximately $30 per kW per year. For an average 8 kW system, this comes out to about $240 per year in ongoing service and upkeep.1. Most solar panel maintenance costs come from cleaning, inspections or occasional repairs, many of which are preventable or covered under service agreements.
A breakdown of average solar panel maintenance costs:
This figure includes inspections, solar monitoring, minor service visits, and administrative support. It does not include costly repairs from unforeseen damage, which may add to total costs depending on solar system warranty coverage.
Many solar installation companies, such as Sunrun, include maintenance in solar panel system plans, eliminating separate solar panel maintenance costs.
Solar panel cleaning cost
For most homeowners, solar panel cleaning is a low or even occasional maintenance cost. In many parts of the U.S., rainfall helps naturally rinse away dust and debris, so regular professional cleaning isn’t always necessary.
If cleaning is needed, homeowners can often rinse panels safely from the ground using a standard garden hose. For step-by-step guidance, including recommended tools and cleaning solutions, see Sunrun’s How to Clean Solar Panels, which outlines safe, non-abrasive methods like using water or mild soap to remove buildup.
In cases where buildup is more noticeable—such as after long dry periods or in areas with higher pollen or dust, professional cleaning services are available, with pricing varying based on system size, roof access, and location.
Unlike large, ground-mounted solar farms that are more exposed to dust and debris, residential rooftop systems typically experience less accumulation. That means most home solar systems maintain strong performance with minimal intervention.
Inspection and monitoring costs
Solar panel inspection and permitting requirements vary by location and are typically handled as part of the installation process. Permitting costs can differ significantly depending on local regulations, system size, and jurisdiction, and are often included in the overall project cost rather than paid separately by the homeowner.
Inspections may include checks for system performance, mounting equipment, and potential issues such as cracked glass, wiring wear, or storm-related damage.
Many systems also include a solar monitoring system, which allows homeowners to track energy production and system performance. Basic monitoring is often included, while more advanced real-time tracking and analytics may be available as an upgrade depending on the provider.
Repair and replacement costs
According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the cost of solar power system repairs can vary widely depending on environmental factors, system design, and component warranties.4 Rather than occurring annually, these expenses tend to arise unpredictably, with some years requiring no service and others involving higher out-of-pocket costs if the system isn’t covered.
To manage this uncertainty, NREL recommends planning for a reserve account to cover unplanned failures, especially in non-warrantied solar power systems. That’s why many homeowners choose solar plans such as Sunrun’s, where solar panel repairs, replacements, and ongoing support are included. It’s a smart way to protect your solar investment from surprise repair costs and ensure ongoing performance without absorbing the risk yourself.

By bundling solar panel maintenance with your subscription plan, Sunrun helps you avoid separate maintenance costs and shields you from the additional expenses of unexpected equipment issues. The result is a cleaner, more affordable path to long-term solar success and less stress along the way.
How do you reduce the cost of solar maintenance?
Choose a home solar panel plan with built-in maintenance
One of the easiest ways to avoid mounting maintenance costs is to go with a solar provider such as Sunrun because we include maintenance, repairs, and monitoring in your plan. Rather than paying for solar panel repair and diagnostics à la carte, Sunrun bundles it all into one predictable monthly payment. That gives you more control over your total cost while avoiding surprise bills for maintaining solar panels.
Add smart battery storage
Adding a battery to your solar panel system can help you make the most of the energy your panels produce, even during outages or after the sun goes down. With energy stored on-site, your home can rely less on the grid, which reduces electricity usage and maximizes your return on solar over time.
If you’re with Sunrun, you can add battery storage in eligible areas to unlock more control and save more long-term, without the hassle of managing complex hardware or maintenance independently.

Proactive monitoring means better performance, less downtime, and fewer maintenance costs.
Help clean solar panels & surroundings
There are a few small, smart steps you can take to help maintain solar panels. Think of it as being a good neighbor to your own solar setup.
Here are some ways for system owners to help with solar panel maintenance:
Clean solar panels yourself: Use a regular garden hose with cold water to rinse off loose dust or pollen from the ground (if reachable). For a deeper clean, use a soft sponge or cloth with plain water to gently remove buildup. Avoid pressure washers, harsh chemicals, or soap.5
Keep solar panels clear of shade: Make a seasonal habit of trimming back tree branches or nearby plants before they grow tall enough to overlap with your roofline. Keep a few feet of space between greenery and the edge of your solar panels to maintain ideal sun exposure.
These small solar panel maintenance efforts may not cost much, but they can help extend the life of your solar panel system and support steady performance between professional visits.
Ensure optimal performance & low maintenance
Solar panels are built to last, and when maintained properly, they can deliver reliable solar power for decades. While unexpected issues are rare, regular checks, occasional cleanings, and smart monitoring systems help keep your solar panel system performing at its best.
